Here in Sancerre we have been experiencing wet and old weather this Spring. The fields are muddy and everyone is still wearing their winter clothes! But now the French weather bureau has admitted that this is officially the coldest Spring in more than 25 years and the wettest since 1950! As a result the vines are only just beginning to break into leaf. They are weeks behind their normal progress. We are expecting harvest to be late this year. The rate of vine growth is plotted on graphs which show the days when the temperature rises above the critical 10 degree Centigrade level. The rate of growth this Spring is exceedingly slow. This is not too much of a problem as yet. However, when the flowers arrive we need less rain and more sunshine to ensure a good crop of fruit.
