French winemakers as a group naturally appear to look to their own interests. This sometimes means they appear to be out of step with the rest of the French population. For instance in the May Presidential elections the wine villages around Sancerre voted overwhelmingly for Nicolas Sarkozy against the national swing. Today is the first round of Parliamentary elections and we may see a similar trend. Winemakers make up only a tiny proportion of the French population and so sometimes feel their voice is not heard loudly enough. Yet it is estimated that more than 25% of all workers are employed in some aspect of the wine trade (transport, manufacturing equipement, administration etc.) Thus the importance to the national economy should not be underestatimated. The interests of the wine makers and distibuters are in fact the interest of everyone in France.
